As the days get longer and the weather warms up, spring offers the perfect opportunity to rethink what movement looks like. While the gym can be a great space to stay active, it’s not the only way to move your body. Sometimes, the simplest and most refreshing forms of movement happen outside.
When the long-awaited warm weather returns, step beyond the gym and explore easy, enjoyable ways to stay active outdoors. No workout plan or experience required.

Spending time outdoors benefits both your physical and mental well-being. Fresh air, natural light, and a change of scenery can help reduce stress, improve mood, and boost energy levels. Outdoor movement can be less structured and more freeing, making it easier to stay consistent. Whether it’s a short walk or a casual game with friends, being outside can help exercise feel more like a break and less like a chore.
A workout doesn’t have to be intense or structured to be meaningful. Any activity that gets you moving with intention can support your well-being. Letting go of the idea that movement only “counts” if it happens in a gym can open the door to more balance and enjoyment. Walking to class, stretching in the sun, or playing outside with friends are all good ways to stay active and get some much-needed Vitamin D during long days of work.
Take it One Step at a Time
Walking is one of the most accessible ways to move your body. A short walk around campus, taking a scenic route to class, or walking with a friend can provide both physical activity and mental clarity. During a busy day of classes, it can be hard to find time to take care of yourself and be active. Walking is an easy way to take advantage of the short breaks and get moving. Even a few minutes outside can make a difference.

Mix it Up
Spring is the perfect season to explore new ways to move. Activities like cycling, hiking, or spending time in nature can help you break out of routine and discover something you love. Choose movement you enjoy, not what you think you “should” do.
Outdoor movement doesn’t have to be done alone, either. Casual, recreational activities can be a fun way to connect with others while staying active. Throwing a frisbee, playing a pick-up game, or simply moving around with friends can make activity feel effortless and enjoyable.
Getting Started
Go for a walk at Chewacla
Start or join an intramural team
Grab some friends and play spike ball on Samford lawn
Play pickleball/tennis
Go on a bike ride around campus

Movement doesn’t have to mean sets, reps, or schedules. Take advantage of the warmer weather and prioritize fresh air, connection, and finding joy outside the gym.
Be Well, Auburn.
