Bring Back Snail Mail!

Dear Reader,

In the age of technology (especially with the addition of AI), writing has become a neglected craft. Communication, or lack thereof, has become quick, impersonal, and thoughtless. How long has it been since you received a written letter? And how would you feel if you got one, just because? Joyous, recognized, appreciated, acknowledged, and sentimental if I had to guess! In the age of one-word texts and abbreviations, letter writing can be your key to better communication and more meaningful connections! Plus, it's FUN! Here are some ways to get your letter-writing journey started.

Stationery

Arguably the best part of writing letters is buying beautiful stationery. I love to collect odd stamps, stickers, bookmarks, newspaper pieces, and ornamental paper to send in my letters! It can also be fun to add a “signature mark” to your letters so your mailers immediately recognize a letter from you. Ink stamps are my favorite way to mark my letters, but a unique sticker, stamp, or envelope works too. If you ever write to a pen pal internationally, the stationery and goods you collect/give are like a portal to another country! It provides a taste of each other's worlds better than any phone call or digital photo ever could. Some additional letter-size goodies include tea bags, bookmarks, drawings, pressed flowers, and Polaroids.

Finding Pen Pals

Now, how on earth do you choose who to write your letters to? Start with family! I guarantee any family member of yours would happily receive a letter from you. Next, think of any friends who are extra important to you. Finally, for the adventurous letter writer, you can find pen pals online from all over the globe! This is such a fun way to learn about different cultures and customs you otherwise would never discover. There are many websites online that have platforms to exchange pen pal information. Instagram is also a great place to search under hashtags like “#penpalcommunity” or “#penpalswanted”. Just be sure you are finding pen pals through accredited websites/Instagram accounts to avoid any sketchy types!

What to Write About

Sometimes sparking inspiration for a letter can be tricky, but my tip is not to overthink it! The letter receiver is not critiquing the grammar, length, or profound content of your letter... they are just happy to receive a letter at all! Write from the heart, keep it light, make it deep... it doesn't matter. Just write whatever flows and makes you enjoy the process of letter writing.

P.S. Have fun!

Be Well, Auburn.
