Earth Day is more than just a date on the calendar. It’s a reminder that the ways we care for our planet and our bodies are deeply connected. At Auburn University, students have countless opportunities to celebrate sustainability while prioritizing their physical and mental wellness. This Earth Day, consider ways you can move with intention, fuel your body, and support the community around you.

Take Your Workout Outside
Spending time outdoors is one of the simplest (and most refreshing) ways to celebrate Earth Day. Instead of heading straight to the treadmill, consider taking your workout outside. Go for a jog through campus, walk with a friend between classes, or bring a yoga mat to Samford Lawn for a stretching session in the sunshine.
Bodyweight circuits (think squats, lunges, push-ups, and planks) require no equipment and can be done anywhere. Choosing to bike or walk instead of driving when possible is another great way to incorporate movement while lowering your environmental footprint. Small shifts like these not only support physical health but also deepen your appreciation for the campus spaces we sometimes rush past.

Get Involved in Auburn’s Community
Wellness is about you, but it's also about the people around you. Earth Day is a powerful reminder that community action creates lasting change. Auburn offers numerous opportunities to engage in sustainability efforts. Students can participate in campus-led environmental initiatives, volunteer for local clean-up projects, or support local farmers' markets that prioritize fresh, seasonal produce.
Choosing to shop local reduces transportation emissions and strengthens the Auburn community. On a daily level, sustainable habits can be simple: bringing a reusable water bottle to the Rec, minimizing single-use plastics, turning off lights when you leave a room, or being mindful about food waste. These choices may feel small, but when practiced consistently, they make a significant impact.

A Sweet Earth Day Treat
Celebrating Earth Day can also be fun. If you’re looking for a lighthearted way to gather friends, try making an easy “dirt cake” for a dorm hangout or post-workout treat. You might remember this nostalgic treat from your kindergarten days. This simple dessert requires chocolate pudding, milk, Cool Whip, crushed chocolate sandwich cookies, and gummy worms.
After preparing the pudding according to the package directions, fold in the Cool Whip and layer the mixture with crushed cookies in cups. Top with gummy worms to create a playful “garden” look. It’s affordable, easy to make in a shared kitchen space, and perfect to enjoy outside on a sunny afternoon. Pair it with a picnic, a study break, or a walk around campus to make Earth Day both meaningful and memorable.

Progress, Not Perfection
Earth Day isn’t about being perfect. It’s about awareness, growth, and choosing better when we can. Sustainability and wellness share a common foundation: intentional habits practiced over time. Whether you commit to moving outdoors more often, reducing waste in your daily routine, supporting local businesses, or simply spending time appreciating the natural spaces around Auburn, your actions matter. This Earth Day, challenge yourself to move your body, care for your community, and show gratitude for the planet that supports us all. When we prioritize both personal wellness and environmental responsibility, we create a stronger, healthier Auburn.
War Eagle and Happy Earth Day!
Be Well, Auburn.
