Scott Bishop

May, 2026
Director, Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI)
This month’s Wellness Champion exemplifies a holistic approach to well-being through her work with the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI). In her role as Director, Scott Bishop, has the opportunity to encourage and support wellness practices every day, something she believes is essential to living and aging well.
At the heart of her work is OLLI’s mission to enhance the quality of life for adults over 50 through intellectually stimulating courses, social experiences, physical activity, and volunteerism. She sees this mission as a powerful reflection of holistic wellness, emphasizing that “healthful living is the best recipe for healthful aging.” While aging naturally brings challenges, Scott believes that living well helps people maintain a sense of positivity, purpose, and connection.
One key pillar of wellness she promotes is intellectual engagement. Through OLLI’s wide range of courses and workshops, participants keep learning and challenging their minds. Scott explains that research continues to show that actively engaging the brain, through problem-solving, learning new skills, or reading, supports memory and cognitive health. She also points to the ample research that emphasizes the importance of social connection. Whether through classes, special interest groups, or social events, OLLI creates meaningful opportunities for people to build relationships. In a time when loneliness is increasingly recognized as a public health concern, these connections play a vital role in both mental and physical well-being. Physical activity is another cornerstone of herprofessional work. From line dancing and yoga to hiking groups that regularly log miles together, OLLI offers accessible and enjoyable ways for people to stay active while fostering community.
In her own life, Scott models the same practices she promotes, staying intellectually engaged, nurturing friendships, and maintaining an active lifestyle. She also aspires to a daily meditation practice, and she follows a simple, mindful approach to nutrition inspired by Michael Pollan: “Eat (real) food. Not too much. Mostly plants.” Her perspective serves as a reminder that wellness is not one-dimensional; it’s a lifelong, intentional practice that includes caring for the mind, body, and relationships at every stage of life.
