This month's Wellness Champion, Karen Hopkins, senior lecturer in Marketing, believes that wellness isn't about finding more time. It's about creating habits that support the life you want to live. By setting clear goals, building accountability, and focusing on what matters most, she has developed a sustainable approach to well-being that benefits both her personal and professional life.
One of Karen's most important daily habits is beginning her day with connection. Whether she's sharing coffee with her husband, teaching a Pilates class, taking a walk with a friend, or simply reaching out to a loved one, these moments help her feel grounded before stepping into the classroom. She believes that nurturing relationships is one of the most important investments we can make in ourselves and others.
Movement is another key part of her wellness journey. After taking Pilates classes, Karen became a certified instructor six years ago. Teaching Pilates keeps her accountable to her own health while also influencing her teaching style. She sees many similarities between coaching movements and the process of helping students master new concepts. Both require breaking complex ideas into manageable steps that build confidence and success.
Karen has also learned the value of recovery. Prioritizing quality sleep, staying hydrated, maintaining a consistent schedule, and learning to say "no" to unnecessary commitments have become essential practices for sustaining her energy and preventing burnout.
Those same wellness principles are reflected in her classroom. She intentionally incorporates movement into her teaching through stretch breaks, brief dance parties, and lessons designed to keep students engaged rather than sitting for long periods. She also emphasizes relationship-building, encouraging students to practice curiosity, active listening, and genuine human connection. These skills benefit both professional success and personal well-being.
This year, Karen extended that passion through her Social Marketing course by challenging students to address loneliness as a public health issue.
