Returning To Routines After Break

Breaks give students a much-needed chance to unwind, reset, and step away from the pressure of classes and assignments. But once it’s over, it can be challenging to return to your typical routine. Whether you’re heading back to school, work, or just trying to re-establish some daily structure, returning to routine can help you feel focused and in control again.

Here are 7 tips to help make this transition easier!

Start the night before:

Set things out like your bag and your outfit for the next day, go to sleep early to get your body’s sleep schedule back in sync, and plan for what your following day and week will look like. This will save you a lot of time and stress when you wake up.

Ease back in:

Take things a little bit at a time and don’t expect to be insanely productive immediately. After a lot of time off, it will take a day or two to get readjusted. Especially with starting a new semester, your week will be overwhelming, so don’t attempt to take on everything at once.

Plan your week:

Use a calendar app, reminders, or a notebook to plan out everything you want to accomplish in your week. Classes, hangouts, work, gym, or anything else you plan to do. Don’t forget to set some time aside to relax and recharge!

Set small goals:

Instead of looking at your entire to-do list and thinking, “I need to get everything done,” narrow your focus to just 2–3 priorities for the week. Choosing a small, realistic set of tasks can make it easier to get back into the swing of things.

Prioritize the basics:

Drink water, eat balanced meals, and move your body. Good sleep and nutrition make it easier to focus and feel motivated. Even with a busy schedule, don’t forget to have time to refuel your body!

Stay accountable:

Tell a trustworthy friend your goals and they can hold you accountable. Work together to help each other achieve your goals and complete everything you both have planned!

Be patient and positive with yourself!

Getting back into routines and building new ones takes time. You’re not supposed to have everything perfect right away. Even if things are moving slowly, celebrate the things you have done!
