What it Means to Work at The Rec

The Rec is well-known for the workout space, group fitness classes, intramural sports, and events like Get Rec'd. What most people don’t see is the team of student employees who work hard to make everything happen. Working at The Rec is more than just a campus job. It’s an opportunity to prepare for the future, build friendships, and help build a positive environment for the entire Auburn community.

To get a better look at what it really means to work at the Rec, we talked to four students from different areas: Membership, Facilities, Auburn Outdoors, and Marketing.

Behind the Scenes

There are many departments that keep The Rec running orderly. Let’s take a deeper dive into the eight roles serving the Auburn Rec:

Membership

Membership is the first face you see when you walk through the front doors. They stay at the front desk to welcome you and help with any customer service questions. They check you in, assist with memberships and guest passes, provide any information, and produce a welcoming environment as soon as you step foot into The Rec.

Marketing

Marketing students focus on promoting programs, events, and services while helping shape the Rec’s overall brand and campus presence. They produce advertisements shown around campus, take photos and videos, run the social media accounts, and create engaging content for students to interact with.

Aquatics

Aquatics protects the safety of all members by preventing and responding to incidents and emergencies in and around the pool deck and hot tub.

Competitive Sports

Competitive Sports referees intramural sports games and provides risk management functions for home club sport games.

Facilities

Facilities provide a safe and clean environment by enforcing policies and performing various cleaning tasks.

Personal Training

Personal training motivates, encourages, and assists each client in attaining his/her personal fitness goals, as well as improving their current fitness level.

Auburn Outdoors

Auburn Outdoors is dedicated to creating experiences and adventures. They provide rental gear and monitor the climbing wall, as well as offer numerous outdoor trips to students.

Group Fitness

Group Fitness instructors lead the GroupFit classes and create a fun atmosphere for enjoyable workouts.

Building Skills for The Future

Working at The Rec goes way beyond the day-to-day work. Each shift builds skills that prepare us for future careers. We learn leadership by working with our teams and striving to be successful in our work. Like any job, we learn time management skills and conflict resolution. One skill that is often overlooked is customer service. Every aspect of The Rec is constantly working with others and learning how to be respectful, friendly, and welcoming. Working here gives all the staff a better overall knowledge of health and wellness to improve anyone’s life.

Why It's Worth It!

Over everything, working at The Rec provides another family away from home. Each employee builds a community like no other, and the friendships made here often go way beyond the workplace. Although this job strengthens our skills and opens doors professionally, what truly matters most are the people we meet, the connections we make, and the memories we create.

Be Well, Auburn.
