Rec Dates > Coffee Dates: Fun Ways to Hang Out at the Rec

Coffee dates are fun… until you realize you’ve had the same one five times this week. Same café, same drink order, same conversation, and more $7 coffees. When you’re just trying to hang out with friends and actually do something, coffee shops can start to feel a little stale.

That’s where the Rec comes in. It’s active, casual, and full of ways to spend time together without the awkward, same-old conversations. Friend dates at the Rec aren’t just workouts—they’re some of the most fun hangouts on campus. Instead of sitting around and making small talk, the Rec gives friends a place to move, laugh, and actually spend time together. Whether it’s a pick-up game or a group workout, hanging out at the Rec turns ordinary friend dates into something way more fun.

Try a Group Fitness Class Together

Nothing bonds friends faster than sweating it out together. From yoga and Pilates to spin or barre, group fitness classes are a fun way to stay active while hanging out. Plus, having friends there makes it way less intimidating and way more motivating to try a new class. And now that group fitness classes are free to everyone, there is all the more reason to come make the Rec your new to-go hangout spot! Sign up for free on the group fitness page on the Auburn Recreation and Wellness website.

Walk, Talk, Repeat

Some of the best conversations happen while moving. Whether you’re walking the track, stretching, or cooling down after a workout, the Rec gives you space to talk without the pressure of “serious” conversation. It’s perfect for catching up on life, classes, or weekend plans. Plus, the track at the Rec covers the entire space and overlooks all the workout areas, with inclines and declines that make it a fun spot to walk, talk, and people-watch with friends.

Elevate the Hangout

The rock wall is one of the best ways to turn a simple hangout into a memorable friend date. Climbing together naturally builds encouragement and teamwork, whether you’re cheering each other on from the ground or giving advice mid-climb. You don’t have to be experienced to enjoy it; half the fun is trying new routes, laughing through the tough spots, and celebrating every small win at the top. It’s active without feeling like a workout, interactive without being competitive, and it creates moments you’ll actually talk about later, making the rock wall a go-to spot for friends looking to switch things up.

Pick-up Games

You don’t need a plan when there’s always a game happening. Grab a few friends and jump into basketball, volleyball, or even badminton. You can talk while you play, laugh at bad shots, and hype each other up without any awkward moments. It’s competitive enough to be fun, but chill enough to keep things light. And don’t forget that the Rec has all the supplies you need at the equipment desk, so there’s no need to keep up with your own gear!

At the end of the day, friend dates are about connection, not just caffeine. The Rec offers a space where friends can move, laugh, and spend quality time together without the pressure or repetition of a typical coffee hangout. Whether you’re walking the track, climbing the rock wall, or jumping into a pick-up game, rec hangouts turn everyday plans into shared experiences. So next time you’re looking for something fun and different to do with friends, skip the coffee line and head to the Rec. You might just find that it becomes your new favorite way to hang out.

Be Well, Auburn.
